Bedford County Sheriff's Office
Special Drug Enforcement Unit

One of the newest... and perhaps most innovative... aspects of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office is our Special Drug Enforcement Unit.  These deputies patrol Bedford County in special police-package Z-28 Camaros... equipped largely with drug forfeiture money, which the Sheriff calls "the ultimate in poetic justice."

When a routine stop is made, one deputy checks out the driver while two more deputies (human and canine) check the vehicle for controlled substances.  Since Sheriff Mike Brown implemented the Special Drug Enforcement Unit, which was funded largely by drug forfeiture money, drug-related arrests are up dramatically.... according to the Virginia State Police, an increase of more than 400% since 1996.  The BCSO is proud of its record and its stance of "Zero Tolerance for Illegal Drugs" in Bedford County.

(By the way, the deputies in this Unit don't mind driving at all!)
