RIGHT:  The beautiful new facility at 1345 Falling Creek Road was completed in 1998.  It serves as headquarters for the BCSO as well as the new E-911 Dispatch Center, which handles communications for the BCSO, Bedford City Police, county-wide fire and rescue, and the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Deputy Sharpe
LEFT:  Deputy Cindy Sharpe greets visitors
to the Bedford County Sheriff's Office
at 1345 Falling Creek Road.  Not only
is she a good cop, but she can answer
the phones, send a fax, press the door
buzzer, and call up records on the
computer all at the same time --
look, ma, no hands!
RIGHT:  Sgt. Mike Miller, head of the School Resource Officer Unit, pauses with Sheriff Mike Brown.  The Sheriff established the S.R.O. Unit when he took office and 1996 and, in cooperation with Superintendent Dr. James Blevins, has continued to expand the program in every school county-wide.

Hint:  Deputy Thomas is the one the size of an oak tree.

LEFT:  Sheriff Mike Brown has worked hard to see that his deputies are among the best-equipped, best-trained and best paid in the region.
RIGHT:  DAREN, The D.A.R.E. Lion.  The D.A.R.E. Program is presented in schools by the S.R.O. Unit throughout Bedford County, as is the Safe Surfin' Internet Safety Program by the Operation Blue Ridge Thunder Task Force.

As evident in the photos above and below, each BCSO
patrol vehicle comes fully equipped with a stuffed DAREN.

RIGHT:  Men and women of the BCSO pause briefly at Safe Surfin' Day at Salem Memorial Stadium in May 1999.  The Salem Avalanche, Pepsi, Gotcha and Blue Ridge Thunder delivered a solid Internet Safety message to more than 5,100 students from Bedford County Schools and treated them to a FREE ballgame.

with Mugsy LEFT:  24 May 1999:  1st Annual Safe Surfin' Day.  Sheriff Mike Brown with the beloved mascot of the Carolina League Salem Avalance, "Mugsy."  (Mugsy's the one in the white jersey.)  Sheriff Mike threw out the first pitch for the contest between the home team and cross-county rival, the Lynchburg Hillcats.  By the time Sheriff Mike's pitch reached home plate, the ball had vaporized, leaving a tangled mess of smoking threads on the ground and delaying start of the game for several minutes.
RIGHT:  Also at Safe Surfin' Day were the K-9 Unit of the BCSO for a demonstration to more than 5,000 spectators.  Here, Deputies Saunders and "Volco" pause on the field.  (That's our analyst, Robin Sundquist, supervising in the top right of the photo.) K-9 Demo

Krantz LEFT:  We even got Bedford County Commonwealth's Attorney Randy C. Krantz, Esq. (center, behind the Foster-Grants) out to Salem for the beautiful, but windy, Safe Surfin' Day at the ballpark.  Randy is an integral part of the Operation Blue Ridge Thunder Task Force.

That's Sharp Top on the left and the slightly taller Flat Top (elev. 4,004 feet) on the right.  About 200 years ago, when the Blue Ridge was the frontier, the Peaks were thought to be the highest mountains in America.  Mr. Jefferson used to like to ramble up to the top of Sharp Top... and did so as late as his 82nd birthday (13 April 1825) about 15 months before his death on 4 July 1826.
