Recreation Commission
The Bedford County Recreation
Commission is comprised of one member from each voting district
who is appointed by the Board of Supervisors. The Commission is
responsible for adopting bylaws and procedures for maintaining a
system of public recreation for county residents.

The Bedford County Parks and Recreation
Department seeks to facilitate and provide a balanced parks and
recreation program and support facilities necessary to provide open
space and basic leisure opportunities to all county citizens.
Goals
In order to accomplish our mission,
the Bedford County Parks and Recreation Department seeks to meet
several goals which include conservation, recreation, fiscal responsibility,
public service, park and recreation facility use and public participation.
- Conservation Goal: To conserve and interpret
the County's natural resources for the public and to ensure the
protection and preservation of special, regional, community and
neighborhood park values for the benefit of future generations.
- Recreational Goal: To develop and
maintain a well-balanced county-wide parks and recreation system
which will provide access to the park and recreation facilities
for the citizens of Bedford.
- Financial Goal: To establish and
maintain a sound financial base for the acquisition, development,
operation and maintenance of future park land and facilities.
- Public Service Goal: To assure
the best possible park and recreation expeiences for county residents
and to foster the best possible image and perception of the regional,
community and neighborhood park facilities.
- Park and Recreation Facility Use Goal: To
encourage the use of park and recreation resources and facilities
by all citizens, regardless of age, gender, physical or mental
capabilities or socioeconomic circumstances.
- Public Participation Goal: To provide
citizens a voice in the decision-making process of the Recreation
Commission, especially in planning and development of new programs
and facilities, planning and development for the future and the
departments effectiveness in meeting its goals.
Objectives
- Phase the development of the park system and
individual sites in relation to services demand.
- Continue the established cooperative program
of sharing school recreational facilities
- Promote park development and programming which
meets the needs of special population groups such as senior adults,
handicapped and mentally retarded.
- Promote comprehensive historical and archaeological
preservation planning in coordination with public facilities,
land use, transportation and private development efforts.
