Revised FEMA Floodplain
The 90-day appeal process for the Revised FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) commenced on October 21, 2009 and will conclude on January 19, 2010. Flood hazard areas identified on the FIRMs are known as Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHA). The SFHAs for Bedford County are comprised of AE and A zones. An AE zone is determined by a detailed study while an A zone is approximated. During the appeal period, any owner or lessee of real property who believes his or her property rights will be adversely affected by the SFHAs may appeal to FEMA through Bedford County. It is important to know, however, that the sole basis for the appeal is having knowledge or information indicating that the proposed SFHA is scientifically or technically incorrect. Note that the 90-day appeal period is statutory and cannot be extended or shortened for any reason.
Below is a link to the Bedford County map that has the proposed SFHAs as an overlay on real property information for Bedford County. An owner can search for his or her property using a name or an address. The Floodplain information that you will be viewing is in DRAFT form.
